Asia Express returns to Antena 1 with a season as vast as China! On Sunday, September 6, at 8:00 PM, the adventure begins along the Silk Road, an epic route through Uzbekistan and China that will take 18 contestants through two worlds separated by enormous cultural differences. Asia Express airs every Sunday at 8:00 PM, and Monday through Wednesday at 8:30 PM, on Antena 1 and AntenaPLAY.
Season 9 brings back to life the idea of a route that connected East and West for centuries. The Silk Road linked not only continents and trading routes, but also brought people, ideas, cultures and technologies together, leaving behind a legacy that changed the world. Asia Express promises a similar experience: a journey that changes perspectives and, on a personal level, leaves you forever changed.
From Uzbekistan’s ancient traditions to China’s future
The new season will bring the biggest cultural contrast ever experienced by Asia Express contestants. Crossing from Uzbekistan into China will essentially mean stepping from one world into another, with adaptation becoming one of the greatest challenges along the route. In Uzbekistan, contestants will discover traditions and customs preserved across generations, while China will immerse them in a world that seems to come straight from the future: multi-level highways, robots, cutting-edge technology at every turn and buildings covered in LED displays. Two countries will require two completely different approaches, forcing contestants to quickly forget what they have just learned and start over every time they enter a new stage of the journey.
The challenges will amplify this experience even further. Hard-to-digest local dishes, adrenaline-fueled stunts, ancient customs and conversations made nearly impossible by the language barrier are just some of the situations the nine teams will face. Beyond the competition itself, these experiences will reveal two countries that both the contestants and viewers will come to know beyond the usual tourist clichés.
Bigger games, higher stakes
The games in this season will be extraordinary as well. Many of them will take place across impressive spaces, with the sheer scale of the locations turning every fight for an amulet into a challenge in its own right. Physical strength, speed, navigation and strategy will matter more than ever in a season where every advantage can change the course of the competition.
And if the route is as vast as China, the egos are no smaller. “Everyone wants to be Alpha,” says Irina Fodor about this season’s contestants. The competition is taken to another level, tempers flare quickly, strategies begin to take shape, yet appearances are masterfully maintained as the race moves forward. Under the pressure of exhaustion, hunger and the fight for first place, every team will sooner or later reveal just how far they are willing to go.
18 contestants, nine teams and a mix like never before
Season 9 brings an unprecedented mix of stars to the starting line. Cheloo and Mihai Ban, his partner from Dakar; Maurice Munteanu and his close friend, designer Connie Preda; Mirela Vaida and her friend, folk singer Oana Tomoiagă; comedian Radu Isac and his friend Eduard Hordilă; footballer Gabi Torje and fighter Alin Alexuc Ciurariu; Loredana Chivu and Anamaria Mocanu; influencers Valerie Lungu and Alex Gâlcă; Mirela Retegan and her daughter, Maya; as well as What’s Up and his wife, Miky are the 18 brave contestants setting off in the footsteps of the traders of old.
With no phones and no money, and with just one euro a day provided by Irina Fodor, the contestants will once again have to rely on their own ingenuity and the kindness of the locals for transportation, accommodation and food. They will run, hitchhike, negotiate without speaking the same language as the people they meet, and push their physical and mental limits in a race whose finish line is the Pearl of Shanghai.
From the traditions of Uzbekistan to China’s technological spectacle, from friendships and alliances to egos and battles for supremacy, Asia Express – Drumul Mătăsii promises a season as vast as China, where the distances are immense, the cultural differences overwhelming, and the competition stronger than ever.
